Indonesia Project Lead (m/w/x)

The BAMBU BARU project aims to position Indonesia as a leader in regenerative construction by leveraging regionally sourced bamboo given its wide availability across the archipelago. It builds on a foundational phase carried out through the ReBuilt Initiative (February 2023 - December 2025) , which explored locally specific pathways for shifting the built environment away from carbon-intensive materials toward nature-based alternatives, generating knowledge on natural systems and socio-spatial dynamics and developing a roadmap for regenerative development demonstrated by  the award-winning BaleBio Pavilion in Bali, an 84-square-meter community hub built from engineered bamboo and salvaged materials to demonstrate active carbon sequestration.

Beyond individual pavilions, the project collaborates with the Indonesian Ministry of Housing to integrate Cement-Bamboo Frame Technology (CBFT) into national affordable housing standards and subsidy programs, creating a blueprint for climate-resilient, low-cost homes that support local economies and ecological restoration.

• Pilot Management & In-Country Representation: Lead the overall planning, coordination, and execution of the BAMBU BARU Piloting Phase in Indonesia, serving as Bauhaus Earth's senior point of contact for key stakeholders while translating Berlin HQ strategy into local operations.

• Team Leadership & Capacity Building: Direct, line-manage, and mentor a local multidisciplinary team, conducting regular 1:1 check-ins, structured feedback loops, and performance evaluations.

• Work Package & Technical Oversight: Manage all study work packages, research timelines, (e.g., value chains, policy, implementation), ensuring strict quality control, budget compliance, and structural standards across material supply chains and prototyping.

• Partner & Consortium Coordination: Facilitate active collaboration and weekly steering alignment across multi-partner consortiums, including Base Bahay Foundation, Bamboo Village Trust, and external consultants.

• Digital Project Management & Strategic Alignment: Implement modern PM tool stacks (e.g., Asana, Google Workspace) for cross-time-zone alignment between Berlin and Indonesia, ensuring project delivery consistently matches funder expectations, risk matrices, and overall governance goals.
  
  

• Risk Mitigation & Change Management: Continuously monitor operational, political, and logistical risks on the ground in Indonesia, establishing proactive mitigation strategies and escalating critical timeline or budget constraints to Berlin leadership. 

• Education: Master’s degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, International Development, environmental engineering,or a related degree in architecture or material science.

• Project Management Experience: Proven track record of leading and managing complex, multi-partner projects funded by international donors, philanthropic foundations, or public grant schemes, specifically within construction, or built-environment contexts. This includes hands-on responsibility for milestone tracking, work package delivery, budget governance, risk mitigation, and formal funder reporting. 

• Regional Expertise: 4+ years of experience collaborating with one or more stakeholders, either government ministries, municipal partners, and/or developers in Indonesia.

• Languages: Full professional fluency in both Bahasa Indonesia and English. 

• Travel Availability: Willingness and ability to travel to Indonesia approximately 3 to 4 times per year for on-site steering, stakeholder engagements, and site visits. 

• Material & Construction Knowledge: Familiarity with bamboo or nature-based construction systems and supply chains.

• Stakeholder Diplomacy: Strong stakeholder management skills across government entities, international funders, research institutions, and NGO/consortium partners.

• Methodological Alignment: Solid grasp of agile project management methodologies, quality assurance (QA) frameworks, and formal donor reporting structures.

• German Language Skills: Proficiency or fluency in German is a plus, but not required.

• High-Impact Work: Shape national housing standards and climate-resilient architecture at a transformational scale in South-East Asia.
